How Many Tiles Are in Mahjong? A Complete Breakdown

If you're new to mahjong, one of the first things you notice is the sheer number of tiles.

There are a lot of them. And they come in different types, different suits, different symbols. Before you can play the game, it helps to understand what you're actually working with.

A standard American mahjong set contains 166 tiles. Here's exactly what they are.

The Full Tile Count

The Three Suits (108 tiles)

The core of any mahjong set is its three suits:

Bams (Bamboo) — tiles numbered 1 through 9, each appearing four times. 36 tiles total. The 1 Bam is often depicted as a bird (usually a peacock or sparrow) rather than a bamboo stalk. 2 through 9 show bamboo stalks in the corresponding number.

Craks (Characters) — tiles numbered 1 through 9, each appearing four times. 36 tiles total. Each tile shows a Chinese character for the number above a red symbol representing 10,000.

Dots (Circles) — tiles numbered 1 through 9, each appearing four times. 36 tiles total. Each tile shows the corresponding number of circles, arranged in clean rows.

The Honor Tiles (28 tiles)

Winds — North, South, East, and West. Four copies of each, for 16 tiles total.

Dragons — Red Dragon (中, Chun), Green Dragon (發, Fa), and White Dragon (sometimes called Soap, shown as a blank or white tile). Four copies of each, for 12 tiles total.

Flowers and Seasons (8 tiles)

These vary by set and style. In many American sets:

  • Four Flower tiles — typically numbered 1–4, each unique
  • Four Season tiles — Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, each unique

These tiles are often used in specific hands or exchanged at the start of the game, depending on the ruleset.

Jokers (8 tiles)

American mahjong sets include 8 Joker tiles — one of the features that distinguishes American play from other styles. Jokers can substitute for any tile in a hand and are central to many winning combinations on the National Mah Jongg League card.

Blank Tiles (typically 2–4)

Most sets include a small number of blank tiles. These serve as spares — useful if a tile is lost or damaged, where a blank can be marked to replace it.

The Full Count: American Mahjong

| Tile Type | Count | |-----------|-------| | Bams (1–9, ×4) | 36 | | Craks (1–9, ×4) | 36 | | Dots (1–9, ×4) | 36 | | Winds (×4 each) | 16 | | Dragons (×4 each) | 12 | | Flowers | 4 | | Seasons | 4 | | Jokers | 8 | | Blank spares | 2–4 | | Total | 154–166 |

Exact counts vary slightly between manufacturers, but 166 tiles is standard for most American sets.

What About Other Styles?

Chinese and Hong Kong mahjong sets typically contain 144 tiles — the same three suits and honor tiles, but without Jokers. Some sets include flowers and seasons; some don't.

Japanese (Riichi) mahjong sets also use 136 tiles — no flowers, no seasons, no Jokers.

If you're playing American mahjong with the National Mah Jongg League card, you want a full American set with Jokers.

Why the Count Matters

Knowing what's in a set helps you:

  • Set up the wall correctly — the wall at the start of a game uses all the tiles, stacked in specific configurations
  • Read discards more accurately — if you've seen three 7 Bams discarded, the fourth is still in the wall or someone's hand
  • Understand what's possible — some hands require specific tiles that only exist four times in the whole set

The tiles aren't just game pieces. They're the vocabulary of the game. The faster you recognize them on sight, the faster everything else clicks.
